The Icla da Silva Foundation provides logistical, emotional and financial support to patients in need of marrow transplants. Below are some of the patients who are currently receiving our assistance. Aline Coelho is 18 years old and has Acute Leukemia. Her only hope for a cure is a bone marrow transplant.
"My name is Aline, I am 18 years old and I have Acute Leukemia. Last year I was treated with chemotherapy and went into remission. When I was almost done with the treatment, the disease came back with 90% of cancer cells. This time my only chance for a cure is a bone marrow transplant. I am currently being treated with new chemotherapies and waiting for a compatible marrow donor. I am here asking for your help. To become a donor you do not have to be in my city, you can look for any donor center near you and all the registrations go to an international bank where my doctors are searching for a donor. If not for me, you may be a donor for any other patient like me. Thank you!" To help Aline and other patients around the world like her, join the marrow registry at one of our drives at www.icla.org or by visiting http://join.marrow.org/ICLA0909. Denise Bertholin Fábrega was born in Guatemala in April of 1980. The proud daughter of a Panamanian mother (with Spanish and Nicaraguan background) and a Guatemalan father (with French and American background). In 2005 she received a B.A. in Political Science and International Studies from Yale University, with distinction in the second major. Denise’s commitment to making a difference in the world started early on in her life as an intern for ANINI, a non-profit in Guatemala that helps children with disabilities. Since then she has worked for a few non-profits: Catholic World Mission, Partners of the Americas, and Women In International Security (WIIS), where she currently serves as the organization’s Development Coordinator. Denise is only 29 years old and was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) on May 7, 2009, just a few weeks short of her wedding to Matt Braun. Denise has big dreams for the future. Before Leukemia became part of her life, she was working on the initial stages of founding a non-profit organization, The Central American Fund for Education (CAFÉ). Along with a friend and her sister who share similar interests, Denise is going to make this dream happen, but we need your help first. Become a bone marrow donor. We need to find Denise a match! Hugo Concha is a 16-year-old young man from Ecuador who is suffering with leukemia. His best chance for survival is a bone marrow transplant from a 100% compatible donor.
Everyone in Hugo's family has been tested but unfortunately no one matched Hugo's bone marrow. Now, Hugo depends on the Be the Match Marrow Registry for a donor not related to him. A search in the Registry has been done but none of the 7.5 million donors registered matched with him. You could be the one to save his life. Join the Registry today. There are many convenient ways you can register as a potential donor. Visit the list of scheduled marrow registration drives at the Icla da Silva Foundations website at www.icla.org or join online by clicking here. If you do not match Hugo, there thousands of other patients like him waiting for a match. If you are already a registered donor or does not meet the health guidelines, there are other ways you can help.
