The Icla da Silva Foundation educational programs were tailored to increase awareness of the general public about the need to diversify the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Registry meanwhile recruiting and retaining volunteers donors.
The core of our program is to:
- Promote public awareness about the need to become a volunteer marrow or cord blood donor through media, audio-visual materials and presentations;
- Teach communities the 6 Steps of Marrow and PBSC Donation;
- Provide specialized outreach and retention programs for minority communities;
- Supply excellent language and cultural assistance to Donor Centers in need to contact preliminary matched donors;
- Provide consistent case management and assist marrow / cord blood donors on the donation process;
- Work side by side with donor and patient to facilitate their meeting;

- Financial aid, information and emotional support to patients afflicted with blood related cancers;
- Referrals to patients searching for medical professionals and/or treatment centers, transplantation and/or second opinion;
- Assistance to patients and families looking for a compatible bone marrow/stem cell match;
- Help to patient and family with Activities of daily living (ADLs);
The Icla da Silva Foundation provides information and assists patients and families searching for adequate treatment outside of their countries when treatment is no longer available there.
- Over 260 patients and their families from all over the world have received emotional, logistical and financial support from Icla da Silva Foundation.
- We became one of the largest recruitment centers for the National Marrow Donor Program, registering over 72,000 (13,000 in 2007) potential bone marrow donors since 1992.
- Facilitated over 150 bone marrow transplants.
- The Icla da Silva Foundation has helped to improve the overall retention rates of donors by utilizing cultural assessments, thereby making more donors available for patients.
